Comment Spam on The Blog Deleted

I'm not sure about other bloggers out there, but we seem to get our fair share of comment spam.  Sure WP-SpamFree catches several hundred per day from automated bots and scripts, which is pretty cool.  I'm glad that they started tracking it and showing me the number of blocked messages in the dashboard - it sure takes the load off of askimet.

However the messages that I still have to go in and remove manually are those from people who didn't read the comment policy - or ignored the message next to the name box that says "no keywords".  Sure this blog is part of the dofollow movement and the commentluv movement, but that doesn't mean your free to leave all the keyword spam you want in the comment field.

So I will continue to remove comments from people who choose to use something other than their name in the name field.  Sometimes if the comment is more than "great post" - i'll allow a site name instead of a name.  But I really don't understand why it is that people who write some great comments choose to have their comments removed instead of displayed, just because they are more concerned about a keyword anchor text link.

So if you want to leave a comment - I would love to have them, but please just use your name.  I really don't like seeing so many great comments go to waste because people chose keywords instead.

Have a great weekend!

Ever sat in an Raynor Ergohuman chair?

Working at a computer for most people means spending a lot of time in a chair and hopefully it is a comfortable chair.  Personally I have always been a fan of leather office chairs.  My preference has been for a mid height back - but recently I have been looking at going to a high back chair for some more support.

I sit in a lot of chairs when I go to office supply stores, but I still haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.  In the process of looking for a new chair, I came across some mesh back chairs.  I had never really thought of a mesh back chair but I figured I would look into it and decide later.

In my search for a mesh back chair I came across one that looks promising its called the Raynor Ergohuman mesh high back chair.  This chair seems to fall in the middle price range for most office chairs of a good quality.  It does come with a lifetime warranty as well - which I thought was a nice feature.

This chair says it is specifically designed for users who use a computer for more than 5 hours.  Which for a lot of us is true for most days.  The adjustable positionable arm rests look great to me.  It does say that if you are outside of a certain height range then this chair will not work very well for you - so make sure to take that into account when looking for an office chair.

Iphone - Just read a great post

I just read a great post about how blogging about the iphone can get you a lot of links. Strange concept I thought - but then I got to thinking and realized that because the apple iphone is such a hot topic on the internet and with fans, that it would make sense.

The blog - mixedmarketarts - talks about blogging about the iphone. He mentions that because of all the people who are constantly grabbing things that say iphone, that just talking about it on his blog has helped him build a large number of links.

I still think this is a pretty random idea - but cool at the same time. In case you haven't yet checked out some of the other great posts on mixedmarketarts - I strongly suggest you go spend some time there. I have been there a few times now in the last few days - and its a great blog.

Have a good day!

Want to Win one of 3 laptops?

I would like to as well!  Thats why I entered this TechDon Contest.  They are giving away 3 laptops, each valued at about $3000.  This is by far one of the best contests I have ever seen on a blog.  Seems simple enough to enter - just make sure that you leave a comment including everything you did to get your entries.

One interesting way to earn entries is leaving comments on other sites, linking to them.  I thought that was a bit different way to earn entries in a contest - but certainly could build a lot of links for them.  If you do it, just make sure you follow blogs comment policies.  For example on this blog - we remove any comment left with keywords in the name field - so just make sure to use your name, alias, etc.

Best of luck to you in this techdon contest!

ArticleSnatch Gets A New Database Server

One of the joys of running a site that is driven by a database is expanding a site to the point where it is causing the database server to crash on a regular basis due to the traffic you receive. This is exactly what happened with our article directory.

The first thing we did was identify the problem, which we disabled the pages that were causing the problem. Then we worked to move the database from one server to a new server that also runs a newer version of MySql. As mentioned before we host with Mosso and have the database on a cluster (a group of servers). One cluster runs the mysql and another cluster runs the php, and a SAN stores the data. As a result, each server has its own job in the piece of the puzzle of putting together a page view on ArticleSnatch.

Fortunately during the time that it took to move the site from one cluster to another, we only had downtime with the tag pages and the search result pages. The rest of the site remained unaffected for the most part. Fortunately now that it is moved, everything works again, and it is a lot faster. We have implemented several code improvements to increase performance of the site and will continue to make more improvements over the next few weeks.

If you have suggestions for improvements, features, comments, or something you would like to see removed from the site, please feel free to use the contact form and let us know. We love to hear from our users.

The Contest to rank the highest for the term "Yicrosoft Directory" was started on Feb 4th, 2008 at 9pm EST. I checked yesterday and google showed that there were 10 results for the phrase "Yicrosoft Directory". This morning I decided to check again just to see what it was starting to look like - now there are over 400 results.

This is a screen shot taken at 8:45am EST on Feb 6th, 2008 for the search of Yicrosoft Directory. There were just over 400 results.

To me the strange thing here is that Microsoft (live.com) is reporting more results than any other search engine.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how the contest for "yicrosoft Directory" turns out.

Yicrosoft Directory - Say What?

Thats right YicroSoft Directory is the official keyword for the SEO contest sponsored by SEO Noob!

I just found out about this today the contest started about 24 hours ago and will go for the next month. Till March 4th, 2008. If you would like to enter read about it at the link above.

Yicrosoft Directory was the keyword phrase picked for this as it does seem to have some nice pun to it based on the recent news. But it also had 0 google results when you search for it in quotes. Thats the Important thing when you want to have a contest.

So there you have it - the Yicrosoft Directory challenge has begun. I hope I do well and learn a lot in the process.

Again if you want to enter the contest you can do so here.

Have a great day!
